As an actor you won't always have to go to a physical location for an audition. With your scope of jobs expanding, you may be asked to send in a Self Tape for your audition. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Define it

A Self Tape is a video audition that is filmed and edited by the actor and sent to casting directors as requested.

Prepare for it

Follow the instructions given by the casting director (slating, length of video, framing, quality, type of file, number of takes, clothing, deadline, etc.)  Being able to take direction is an important part of being an actor.

Memorize the sides provided. Do not read. If you have someone reading lines along side you make sure they familiarize themselves with their lines to assure a natural delivery

Choose a setting with minimal distractions. The ideal space would be a blank background, isolated from others with minimal background sounds. Choose a time you know you will not be interrupted

Proper equipment. The quality of your video matters. You can use your smartphone to record just be sure you are using a camera that has a clear lens and a clear mic. If you are using a DSLR camera or an external mic, be sure to educate yourself on the device functions to make recording and editing as seamless as possible. If you are recording in a space where ambient noise could be a problem, using a mic is something to consider. Use a tripod to make sure the framing of your video is consistent and steady

Dress appropriately! If you are provided with instructions for clothing, follow them closely. If no guidelines are provided, do not wear a costume, instead dress in the character’s likeness. For example, you are auditioning for a role as a white colour professional consider wearing a button up shirt, or a blazer. Wear solid colours rather than distracting patterns. You want people to pay attention to you, not your interesting shirt.

Tape it

Speak clearly and concisely.

Maintain eye contact with the lens. If you have a reader, make sure they stand as close to the camera as possible. You can use them as your focal point if needed. DO NOT look down or let your eyes wander around the room.

Try to run through without stopping! This will make editing much easier If you are shooting multiple scenes, shoot each scene separately. Make sure to add transitions in between the clips when editing

Send it

Make sure you are sending your Self Tape as directed by the recipients (correct file type, destination, and deadline). Never send unsolicited hardcopies unless requested. Your digital submission is enough.

Now you have the foundation to making a Self Tape. This is also a great opportunity to get comfortable being on camera. The more you record, the easier it will be!
