Production Description

Casting short film The Other Stuff from Executive Producers Anthony Q. Farrell and Bernard Gray.

After a breakthrough moment during couples therapy, Winston must confront his uncle about the abuse he endured in their relationship. Through Winston, The Other Stuff explores the shared and often unhealed generational trauma that Black men have to live through, brought on by a litany of arduous circumstances.

 

Roles

WINSTON WILLIAMS (LEAD)

Male, 30, Afro-Caribbean.

Winston struggles with the identity crisis that comes with escaping his family's criminal reputation for a life more suited for his future family. He convinces himself that confronting his abuser will fix a certain darkness within him and allow him to become the father and husband he is expected to be. Instead, Winston must also take accountability for the anger and lingering familial traits that plague him.

SHANNON BROWN (Principal)

Female, 27, Black.

Pregnant with her first child, art curator Shannon wants her fiance Winston to release the family trauma weighing him down so he can be the best version of himself as he enters fatherhood. She admires the parts of Winston’s character that mirror the she loves best about her father, who shares a dark background similar to Winston's family. For their budding family, Shannon takes Winston to couples therapy.

YOUNG OLIVER (SOC)

Male, mid to late 20s, Black.

A young man who, while he had his own life to live, is now the sole guardian of his nephew. His obligation to his brother made taking the boy a must, not a choice.

YOUNG WINSTON’S FATHER (SOC)

Male, 30s, Black.

A man raised by and in the streets now finds himself a father unequipped with the tools to do the job. With his freedom on the line and no other options. He leaves his only son with his brother.

YOUNG WINSTON (SOC)

Male, 10, Black.

Young Winston is a young Jamaican boy who recently moved to Toronto with his parents. He witnesses the comings and goings of his lawless parents, who eventually send him to live with his uncle.
